Character Development Ch. 1-10

Each character in Ragtime are symbols that play a major role of in depth importance, that help play out the story and what the writer wants to get across to the reader.

Father
- The Father is an affluent patriot and represents the traditional views held by many Americans in the 1900's. He is a symbol of America's opulent upper class and their values, holding within him the portrayal of all affluent Fathers in America.
Mother
- The Mother, an opulent upper class American, also holds with in her the portrayal of all affluent Mothers in America. She is the symbol of the illusion most upper class woman live in America. A delineation of the the psychological change that many affluent mothers undergo in their marriage. Mother, disappointed with her marriage, no longer holds the same passion for her husband, but instead sees him as a friend or ordain family member.
Little Boy
- The Little Boy is the son of the Father and Mother. In the book, he is an observant boy full of intelligence and curiosity, perpetually learning of his surroundings. He is a symbol of America’s future.
Harry Houdini
- He is an illusionist, tricking people’s minds into forming a delusion. He is a symbol of life in America as seen through the eyes of Americans, who believe that their life in America is great and for those immigrating to the nation, will be prosperous.
Evelyn Nesbit
- She is a symbol of sex and beauty. She represents the actions of Americans, seeking pleasure and emotional satisfaction, binging in promiscuous activities or other forms dissolute actions.
